It’s finally the end of the decade that was 2020, a year that I am definitely glad to see the back of.

Despite the lowest of lows from this year, there have been some highs, and I’ve learnt so much about myself.

  1. I’ve learnt when I need a break, when enough is enough. Admittedly I learnt this by having a breakdown, getting signed off work, ending up on anti-depressants and in therapy. But the important thing is I learnt it.
  2. I’ve learnt who is most important to me, and who I miss seeing.
  3. I’ve rekindled my love of baking and drawing. Like everyone else in the UK we baked a lot of bread in lockdown and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. We made sourdough (obviously), bagels and focaccia the most. I drew all sorts of things, new baby cards, animals and our wedding venue.
  4. I learnt how to make scrubs and spent some of my furlough making scrubs for the NHS. It’s been far too long since I got my sewing machine out, and being selfish, it felt good to contribute in some way when I felt so useless sitting at home.
  5. I learnt that I’m pretty good at wedding planning, which is lucky because I’ve had to plan seven different versions of our wedding. And while we won’t be getting the wedding we planned on our original date, we’ve decided that the most important thing to us is to be married, and the party can wait.
  6. I’ve learnt how important a routine is for me and my mental health. The first few weeks of furlough were very weird for me, as I was adjusting to the longest time without work or school routine in 24 years.
  7. Finally, and arguably most importantly, I learnt how to make espresso and pornstar martinis. If you have to be your own bartender, you may as well do it right!

I’ve tried to focus on the positive things I’m taking from 2020, and the ones I’ve chosen may seen insignificant but it’s been a pretty shit year so there’s been slim pickings!

My main resolution for 2020 was to be positive, even when I didn’t feel like it, and boy has that really been tested this year. But it also helped me to appreciate the smallest good thing, approach change with an open mind and a positive outlook, and not to dwell on the negativity that was overwhelming this year.
